Ethel Cain was one of the revelations of 2022 thanks to the conceptual and narrative ‘Preacher’s Daughter’. That was an album about religion, self-affirmation and cannibalism that the artist has been able to present all over the world, partly supported by Florence + the Machine herself.
Ethel Cain’s new album will arrive on January 8, it will receive the promising name ‘Perverts’ and its first single, ‘Punish’, can be heard from today. Ethel accompanies it with a long text called “The Consequence of Audience” that can be read on her Tumblr page.
Ethel had warned that her next project would be composed of long and dense compositions, and that is what ‘Punish’ offers, in particular, almost seven minutes of pure devastating doomgaze immersed in the deepest darkness. You’ll like it if you like Wulven, a band recommended by Ethel Cain.
The first minutes of ‘Punish’ advance at a glacial pace and, based on a combination of piano and voice, unfold the icy and depressive atmosphere of the song. After a few minutes, without warning, an ocean of electric guitars floods the recording.
The motto of ‘Punish’, which says “love has punished me,” is explained in the song’s lyrics, which seem to revolve around an “angel cast out of heaven.” ‘Punish”s reference to Gary Plauché suggests that ‘Perverts’ will continue the violent narrative of Cain’s debut.
