Dorian’s ‘Bad Romance’ sounds more like New Order

“I want your horror, I want your illness” Lady Gaga sang in ‘Bad Romance’. At the time, Gaga said that ‘Bad Romance’ was a celebration of the dark side of the person you loved: “When you love a person you fear losing them. In ‘Bad Romance’ I sing that I want all the disgusting parts of you because I have them too. All those things that you think no one will want, I want them,” he explained in a video that has circulated these days.

‘Bad Romance’, published 15 years ago, could have served as inspiration for ‘Dark Matter’, Dorian’s new single. The theme is similar: Marc Gili is based on the astrophysical theory of dark matter to compose an allegory about that dark side that every person hides inside, and that the other desires. Its intention is overtly sexual. Or sex-affective, rather.

This is how Gili tells it in an interview with JENESAISPOP that will be released soon: «’Dark matter’ refers to an astrophysical concept according to which 80-85% of the matter in the universe is not visible, but it is known that it is there through the gravitational movement of the planets. In the same way, the personality of a human being is full of dark matter, parts that are hidden from others. ‘Dark Matter’ talks about a person who, while making love, begs the other to explain their sexual fantasies openly. “It is an invitation to open your heart to a trusted person, as long as there is a special contract between the two parties.”

‘Dark Matter’ seeks that invisible side of the loved one, traveling to their “obsession” and their “zone of darkness”, where they “hide the truth.” It is a “game between demons” without “jealousy and without dramas.” And the concept of polyamory or an open relationship also emerges in the lyrics: “You are not just mine, nor do you cut my wings,” Gili sings in the Song of the Day.

On the aesthetic side, ‘Dark Matter’ doesn’t sound like Lady Gaga but uses 100% New Order synthesizers. Added to these are guitar licks that seem more like Nile Rodgers. Curiously, the group mentioned in the lyrics is another: Permanent Paralysis. Along with all these elements, Dorian puts together another of those direct and clear hits that he knows how to do so well. ‘Dark Matter’ is already the fifth single from ‘Possible Futures’, Dorian’s new album, which comes out this Friday; Before that came ‘What I remember about you’ with Viva Sweden, ‘A slow motion’ with Daniella Spalla, ‘El sur’ with Santiago Motorizado and ‘Something special’.
