Dora Jar is a singer from North Carolina who has been among the most talked about emerging artists of the past couple of years. An inevitable consequence of supporting some of the biggest superstars of the moment, such as Billie Eilish and The 1975.
This is where Dora Jar has come thanks to her succulent rock-pop sound, a sound that, in songs like ‘Scab Song’ or ‘Comfortably in Pain’, mixes guitars and electronics. In the singles from her debut, her style has been tinged with colour and surrealism.
‘No Way to Relax When You Are on Fire’, Dora Jarkowski’s debut album, is out this Friday under the multinational umbrella. Among its advance singles are a track with a very Faye Webster sound, ‘Puppet’, and another that has dipped its toe into electronica, ‘Behind the Curtain’. But the Dora Jar single to start with is ‘Ragdoll’, one of her most accessible and catchy songs. It’s today’s Song Of The Day.
The song on ‘Ragdoll’ mixes acoustic guitars with a programmed drum ‘n bass base. Above all, a pop – but alternative – prism predominates in this song in which Dora Jar uses the image of the “rag doll” to talk about her need for liberation. “In the song,” explains Dora Jar, “I find power in letting go; if I’m not in control, that’s okay.”
The inspiration for ‘Ragdoll’ is more unexpected, as the song was born after Dora Jar underwent a session of “Ketamine therapy” with her mother. “I felt like a wooden balloon and all these contradictions came to me; I’m shy but also outgoing, I’m light but also heavy.”
