We offer you an opinion for and another against ‘APT.’, the single by Rosé and Bruno Mars, which has been number 1 globally on Spotify:
«’APT.’ It is based on a very original concept inspired by a Korean drinking game, “apt”, a game that is also musical and involves marking a rhythm and singing a melody. The word comes from the English “Apartment”, so the union of Rosé and Bruno Mars makes, on paper, all the sense in the world. However, ‘APT.’ It doesn’t seem as fresh to me as the influences from which – ahem – it draws, not only from Avril Lavigne’s pink era, but from Charli xcx’s ‘SUCKER’ and, therefore, Toni Basil’s ‘Mickey’.
Especially ‘SUCKER’, Charli xcx’s most underrated album, with all its grit and attitude, makes ‘Apt.’ seems like child’s play. The hooks are there, surgically introduced, but neither Rosé nor Bruno sound credible in this context of processed, bubblegum punk-pop, and the song, with successive listens, only becomes worse and not better. «They say that YouTube is no longer what it was, that people have moved to TikTok… not in the case of South Korean artists. This ‘APT’ by Rosé and Bruno Mars has reached 400 million views in just one month, which certifies its good streak. In addition to having published one of the best songs of 2024 with Lady Gaga, the artist co-produces and co-writes this entertainment that could have been sung by Shampoo.
The song is a succession of hooks that go beyond the crazy repetition of the “APT” concept. There’s the bridge “I’m on my way” and above all that irresistible moment in which both – separately – break their voices in the pre-chorus (“just meet me at the…”). The video is directly a succession of memes. Bruno as Cupid. Rosé playing the drums… A trinket that Mars defines very well in the phrase “I’m talking drink, dance, smoke, freak, party all night.” Sebas E. Alonso.
