Debbii Dawson approaches ABBA to survive in ‘Happy World’

For a few days now, a new edition of the UMusic Song Contest has been held in our forums. It is the 5th consecutive year in which the “contest” takes place. The contest that chooses a winning song by an unknown artist approximately every couple of weeks has ended with the victory of Debbii Dawson. The user Frikomid introduced us to his song ‘Happy World’, which we choose as Song of the Day today.

Debbii Dawson is a singer from Minnesota who has become known in the United States on America’s Got Talent. Later she was signed by RCA, being a favorite of Katy Perry in particular. Debbi self-released her first EP last year called ‘Learning’, in which songs like ‘Eulogy for Nobody’ presented a folkier sound, in the vein of Kacey Musgraves (‘Even If It Kills Me’) or even more Sufjan Stevens ( ‘Eulogy for Nobody’).

Their EP this summer, ‘How to Be Human’, is made up of 5 songs that range between acoustic, like the beginning of ‘Solitude’, and pop, as is the case with the song at hand today. ‘Happy World’ sounds unabashedly ABBA under Zhone’s production, as the lyrics seek to create a safe space.

“I tell myself this is a brave world / I found my own little space that I can hide in / It’s kind of dark, but at least it’s mine” is the chorus of a survival song that at another point boasts: “I will still be alive two meters under the ground.” The chorus of the song rekindles that whole feeling.

Lately Debbii Dawson has embarked on a tour with Orville Peck and in fact we find her on one of the songs on ‘Stampede’, specifically on the ballad ‘Back at Your Door’.
