David Lynch has been diagnosed with emphysema, which forces him to stay home indefinitely due to the risk of contracting any kind of infection, “even a cold,” as it could prove fatal. Whether or not he will be able to direct more films or series in the future is unclear. However, the director of ‘Mulholland Drive’ assures that he will not retire “ever.”
Lynch spoke to Sight & Sound about his diagnosis, blaming it on his lifelong smoking habit. The most common cause of emphysema is smoking, and the disease causes breathing problems, coughing and even chest infections.
“I’m housebound, whether I like it or not. It would be very bad for me to get sick, even with a cold,” the acclaimed director explained. He also said that he can only walk “a short distance” before feeling like he’s running out of air. As for the question of whether or not he will direct again, he has stated that it is unlikely: “I would do it remotely if we get to that point. I wouldn’t like it too much.”
Shortly after the news broke, Lynch released an official statement giving further details about his diagnosis, saying that he is “in great shape” except for emphysema: “I love tobacco – the smell of it, lighting up cigarettes, smoking them – but there is a price to pay for this enjoyment and for me it is emphysema.” Lynch also shares that he has not smoked for over two years and is “full of happiness.” Lastly, he sends a reassuring message to his fans: “I will never retire.”
