Coco Jones is one of the R&B talents for which the American industry is betting. Active since 2006, although he is only 26 years old, Jones has been part of the Disney Channel school, and since 2022 he has focused on developing his musical career.
Since then, Jones has achieved a couple of milestones in his career. The first has been to win a Grammy for the best performance of R&B by ‘ICU’ (2022), which was imposed on other nominated as ‘Kill Bill’ of SZA. Jones has also competed in the Grammy of this year, in the same category, for his single ‘Here we go (uh oh)’, but has lost against Muni Long.
The second milestone is having achieved Samplear ‘Toxic’ (2003) by Britney Spears in her new single, ‘Taste’. Spears’ repertoire, such as so many other artists, is very difficult to license because their publication rights are distributed among multitude of composers, producers, editors, long.
Throughout history, Spears has been sampling very rarely. Lately, by Charli XCX in ‘Spring Breakers’ (2024). And in ‘Scream & Shout’ (2012) by Will.i.am. Because Spears was the guest artist. In 2003, Venetian Snares left with his crushing ‘i’m a Slave 4 u’ (2001) until he is unrecognizable.
In ‘Taste’, the chorus of the song has been written around the melody of the chorus of ‘Toxic’, reinventing the Spears futuristic pop classic in R&B code. In addition, it seems that Spears’s voice is sample directly from the original recording, that is, the producers Stargate, Jasper Harris and Aaron Shadrow have not “interpolated” the melody, but have been extracted from the original and recontextualized source. At least, that seems.
This would not matter to anyone if ‘Taste’ was not a good song, but it is. ‘Taste’ is the third advance of Jones’ debut album, ‘Why not more?’, Which is put on sale on April 25.
