Charlie Puth is one of the male pop stars dedicated to pop whom we can trust the most, since his catalog of great songs is considerable, both those he has written for himself (‘Attention’) and those he has given to other artists (‘Harleys in Hawaii’ by Katy Perry).
Now, a year after Taylor Swift declared to the entire world that “Charlie Puth should be a more famous artist” in the title track of her previous album, Puth is launching promotion for her next album, ‘Whatever’s Clever’, which will go on sale on March 6.
The cover is… curious, to say the least. But ‘Changes’, the first preview, is undoubtedly one of the best songs he has written. The homage to the jazz-splattered pop of the 80s and 90s is evident – for example, to hits like ‘Higher Love’ (1986) by Steve Winwood – but the best thing about ‘Changes’ is its crescendo, which introduces surprises along the way and, above all, its joyful spirit, just when we need it most.
‘Changes’ seems to be about how time and distance change a close relationship; The narrator feels nostalgia for what they shared before (“we would share our fears”) and perceives the emotional separation (“I can feel the distance”), accepting in the end that perhaps “that’s just the way it is.”
The ’90s references are accentuated in the video for ‘Changes’, which includes animations and a Charlie Puth dressed somewhat in the style of ‘Doctor in Alaska’. Brooke Puth, Charlie’s wife, makes a cameo in the clip: they both announce that they are expecting a baby.
