Carlos Ares continues to vibrate high after the release of the great ‘Peregrino’, an album in which he surrendered to his Galician roots and claimed his role as one of the most interesting artists on the national scene. The two singles he has released since then, ‘Importante’ and ‘Autóctono’, consolidate his good work and offer two very different versions of the same artist. Because you can only choose one, ‘Importante’ is the Song of the Day.
‘Importante’ was Carlos Ares’ first release after ‘Peregrino’. The whole issue is a great crescendo in which people constantly, and relentlessly, talk about someone who believes themselves to be more “important” than they actually are. He could be referring to someone in the music industry, a stereotype, but more likely he’s referring to all of us. Him, included.
In this way, the Galician makes his point of view clear in the first verses, telling that “so important” person that his death will have no impact in the grand scheme of things: “It will seem fatal to you that I tell you / “That the day your name is in an obituary / Regardless of whether it hurts your relative / It will have a weight equivalent to that of an ant.” From here, he takes this melody and stretches it throughout the entire song.
Although this starts out as a sort of folkie diss track, it quickly turns into something much bigger. Ares is telling that person that everything will remain the same when he is not there in the most existential way possible, arguing that the “eternal lottery of the years” will continue to be played and people will “clog the avenues again.” Everything leads to some very large violins that, perhaps, could sound even more spectacular.
