Nicolas Sarkozy entered the Santé prison in Paris this Tuesday, becoming the first former French Head of State to lose the right to freedom. Sarkozy is serving a five-year sentence for conspiracy after receiving illegal funds from the Gaddafi regime for his 2007 presidential campaign.
The singer Carla Bruni, Sarkozy’s wife, has accompanied the former president to prison dressed in sober black, almost in mourning, and both have entered the penitentiary center by car and not on foot, reports El País. The videos show them apparently calm, followed by photographers and onlookers.
Sarkozy will live isolated from the rest of the prisoners for protection reasons. According to El País, Sarkozy will have access to a gym and library, although according to his lawyer he could be free in “three weeks or a month”, since he has requested parole.
Bruni, who married Sarkozy in 2008, has continued her musical career in recent years, with collaborations such as ‘Malumore francese’ with Michele Bravi, released in 2024. However, her latest studio album, ‘Carla Bruni’, is now five years old. For those who don’t remember, Bruni was first lady of France during Sarkozy’s presidency, between 2008 and 2012.
Sarkozy, on his networks, has defended his innocence: “I want to tell the French, with the unbreakable strength that I have, that it is not a former president of the Republic who is imprisoned this morning, but an innocent man,” he declared, in a message shared by his wife.
