C. Tangana triumphs in his directorial debut in San Sebastian

C. Tangana’s film debut as director of the documentary ‘La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés’ has been a huge success. Comparisons with Carlos Saura and great reviews have marked the premiere of the film at the San Sebastian Festival, in the New Directors section. In addition, and in an additional way, he has clarified his position regarding making new music.

El Diario compares Carlos Saura to C. Tangana for the way he represents flamenco in the film, with “vibrant sequence shots” and a “use of live sound that is thrilling.” The documentary, described as an “excellent debut” and recorded “handheld” and “without cutting,” follows guitarist Yerai Cortés through various performances while telling a story of family traumas.

Regarding these comparisons, Antón Álvarez has clarified that the film “has the spirit of being a response to Saura” rather than an imitation: “For me he is a great master, and I have had a profound approach to flamenco thanks to him and his perspective,” he says.

However, what Tangana has tried to do is show another side of the same issue: “For Saura to be able to do all this, you have to understand that there is another way of experiencing flamenco that is on the other side and that is built inward so that you can then get on stage and see it as magnificent as this,” he concludes.

El Mundo, in turn, asked Álvarez about his musical plans. Specifically, about that lost rap album that he was going to release in 2018, before embarking on the journey that would end up leading to ‘El Madrileño’: “They’ll release that when I die,” he jokes, while denying the possibility of its release.

He also clarifies that if he releases something, it must be strictly “contemporary.” However, he says that he is not making music at the moment: “I haven’t been in the studio for two years.”
