The worlds of British culture and journalism have decided to stand up to the government in the face of plans to allow artificial intelligence companies to use without permission protected by copyright.
The newspapers have chosen to devote their covers to the matter in protest of the intentions of the British government and the musicians – more than a thousand – have also joined the initiative in a different way. They have done it with “Is this what we want?”a “mute” album in which we can only hear atmosphere sounds throughout the recording.
Among the musicians who have shared the recording are members of Blur, Radiohead, Bastille, Mystery Jets, Dua Lipa, Paul McCartney and Jamiroquai or artists like Kate Bush either Annie Lennox.
The album has been created in protest against the British government plans to allow artificial intelligence companies (AI) to use without permission protected by copyright. Right now, that proposal is subject to citizen consultation with what the actions of the actors involved in it can help politicians to recult.
“The government’s proposal would deliver the work of a lifetime of the country’s musicians to artificial intelligence companies, for free, allowing these companies to exploit the work of musicians to overcome them in competition,” said the British composer Ed Newton-Rexwho is behind the idea of the album.
For its part, a government spokesman has declared that the current copyright regime is preventing creative industries, the media and the AI sector from reaching its maximum potential, and that cannot continue. “
The song titles result “The British Government Must Not Legise Music Theft to Benefit Ai Companies” (“The British government should not legalize the theft of music to benefit artificial intelligence companies”).
