Beyoncé has blocked the use of her 2016 song ‘Freedom’ in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, after Trump spokesman Steven Cheung posted an X-rated video of Trump getting off a plane with ‘Freedom’ playing in the background. A clearly provocative decision, as ‘Freedom’ is the official song of Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign on the Democratic side. Harris announced her candidacy last month, after Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race.
According to Rolling Stone and Billboard, Beyoncé’s “record label” and her publisher have threatened legal action against the Trump campaign for its use of ‘Freedom’, following the video’s release. A “cease and desist” was enough for the video to be immediately deleted from the Trump campaign’s profile on the aforementioned social network.
‘Freedom’ is the great anti-racist anthem by Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar, a song in which Knowles denounces the police violence exercised against the African-American population in the United States. In the last month, for example, the murder of Sonya Massey at the hands of a police officer, in her own home, has shocked the country. ‘Freedom’ was the fourth single from ‘Lemonade’.
Beyoncé is not the only artist who has, in recent weeks, pointed out the use of her song in Donald Trump’s campaign. Celine Dion has also had to ask that ‘My Heart Will Go On’ not be used, much less her image singing the song live, at Trump’s rallies.
Beyoncé has just made headlines for announcing her own brand of whiskey, while her album ‘Cowboy Carter’ has still not been promoted in any way, months after its release.
