Ariana, Cardi B, Charli… support Kamala Harris’ candidacy

Kamala Harris’ name is a strong contender to represent the Democratic Party in the upcoming US general election in November. Following Joe Biden’s – not so unexpected – withdrawal from the presidential race, Biden has publicly endorsed Harris’ candidacy, who is, after all, the current vice president, as have other names in culture, especially in film and television (George Takei, Jamie Lee Curtis) and music.

This is the case of Ariana Grande, who shared Biden’s statement supporting Harris in her stories, or Katy Perry, who used a fragment of her song ‘Woman’s World’ to probably send a feminist message. It’s time for a woman to take on the role of president of the United States, she will think. Her admired Hillary Clinton, whom she promoted incessantly, did not succeed a few years ago. Clinton lost against Donald Trump, the main favorite this year, and Harris has promised that she is “prepared” to take him down.

Cardi B, who is not usually one to mince her words when speaking out on politics and has even met with Bernie Sanders, has also thrown her support behind Kamala. The author of ‘Invasion of Privacy’ thinks the Democratic Party should “grant this moment” to Kamala instead of competing for leadership. Gavin Newsom, the current governor of California and a distant cousin of Joanna Newsom, is one of the favourite candidates.

One of the singers who has most seriously endorsed Harris’s possible candidacy is John Legend, who has declared that he will “do everything in his power” to help Harris and to prevent Trump’s “authoritarian and oppressive Project 2025,” the ultra-conservative plan of the Republican Party, from succeeding. In addition, Legend has praised the Biden administration for its management of the pandemic, climate change, student debt and unemployment.

Demi Lovato has also seconded Harris’s bet, but the most curious news linking the former prosecutor’s possible appointment with music has been made by Charli XCX. After XCX tweeted that “Kamala IS Brat”, publicly showing her support for the current vice president, the official X account of the Biden-Harris campaign, renamed “Kamala HQ”, has updated its X header with an image inspired by the cover of ‘BRAT’. The “BRAT summer” continues to take an unexpected path.

If she is finally named leader of the Democratic Party and defeats Donald Trump, Kamala Harris would become the first female president of the United States, the first Asian president (her mother was from India) and the first black president. Her support for women’s reproductive rights is among her main concerns. On the less pleasant side, her police past, particularly criticized by the African-American community for its support for mass incarceration, looms over her. See you in November…
