Alondra Bentley released her first album in Spanish this week, which also marks her return to this format after 6 years, which have passed since ‘Solar System’. ‘The Matter’ is an album that talks about life and death, inspired by both his daughter and the death of his mother. For example, the title song, so intriguing and ghostly, is a Western that seems to swarm between two worlds.
‘Marchar’, which we choose today as Song of the Day, is one of the most intimate songs on the album and also one of the most beautiful, narrating the last moments of his mother.
In a simple way, Alondra Bentley asks herself the big questions of life: “where was she before she was born, what will happen when she dies.” The big difference compared to other existentialist songs is its acceptance, or at least, its fight for it: “I’m going to disappear, it’s natural, try not to think in such a Western way, do everything you like before leaving.” says the chorus.
According to the Sonido Muchacho press release, Alondra is recording some of her mother’s last words, despite the fact that she got angry when she heard them: “She didn’t have long to live and she told me very calmly. I remember getting angry and defensive, but I couldn’t have been more right,” he recalls.
The acoustic production is very lightly embellished by the clarinet of Pablo Borderías, while the entire album has been produced by Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals and Bernardo Calvo. The vinyl is for sale on the label’s website.
