A member of Bicep, operated on for a brain tumor

Matt McBriar, a member of Irish electronic music duo Bicep, pictured right, has undergone surgery for a brain tumour, specifically a “craniopharyngioma”, a rare type of non-cancerous brain tumour located in his “pituitary gland”. McBriar underwent surgery on 9 August, which led Bicep to cancel a concert in Cornwall “due to unforeseen personal circumstances”.

In an Instagram post, McBriar said he began to feel “fatigued” and “having headaches” in late 2023 and that medical tests detected the lump, fortunately, “in time” for it to cause further damage. McBriar says that if the tumor had been discovered later, he could have partially lost his sight due to the size of the tumor since, in the position it was in, it was “pressing on his optic nerves.”

McBriar, who has confirmed that the operation “went well”, is currently receiving treatment and will rest for “six to eight weeks”, followed by a “long post-operative period”. Meanwhile, his bandmate, Andy Ferguson, continues the Bicep tour in the United Kingdom.

Bicep is one of the most interesting electronic projects to emerge in recent times. Both their debut, ‘Bicep’, released in 2017, and their second album, ‘Isles’, released in 2021, are among the best of their year.
