La Roux, who has not released an album since ‘Supervision’ in 2020, announces her return 6 years later. Of course, ‘Old Flames’ will not be published until November 6, in 6 months. The album is presented with a heartbreaking electropop song called ‘Cabin Fever’, which already releases a very simple video that lives up to its name in some way: it was recorded at the lake house.
Elly Jackson was initially known for bangers like ‘Bulletproof’ or ‘In for the Kill’. Later, for songs that clicked after 6 or 7 listens, like those on their second and third albums in general. I refer to ‘Uptight Downtown’. And this ‘Cabin Fever’ is certainly in the latter group.
Taking its name from the anxiety of “cabin syndrome”, ‘Cabin Fever’ is a somewhat distressing song, in tune with the album ‘Old Flames’, which will narrate a romantic breakup with someone you have been with for 17 years. In a press release, La Roux says that the album captures the process of accepting “who he is now” through addictions and a process of self-recognition.
Maybe that’s why he repeats “Well, I’ve got cabin fever / And I can’t take it down” dozens of times. With no other asset than personal reiteration in search of the assumption of things, it can grow as track 2 of ‘Old Flames’ – it comes out after an intro – but not sustain a campaign for 6 months. Rather we will need the second single tomorrow. Who invented these 6-month campaigns, anyway?
