From ‘Waka Waka’ to ‘Dai Dai’: Shakira will try again at the World Cup

Shakira will once again be in charge of performing the official song of the FIFA World Cup, which this year will take place in Mexico, Canada and the United States. It is titled ‘Dai Dai’ and it is a collaboration with Burna Boy. The Colombian artist has shown around a minute of the song, but the full version, along with the video clip, will be available on May 14.

“From the Maracaná Stadium, here is ‘Dai Dai’,” reads the Colombian’s publication, who surely took advantage of her massive concert in Copacabana to record the spot. The clip begins by remembering that Shakira has already been involved with the World Cup on three previous occasions, showing the balls for each competition.

The first was Germany 2006, in which ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ became the unofficial anthem of the tournament. This was followed by South Africa 2010, with the famous ‘Waka Waka’, and Brazil 2014, with ‘La La La’. The latter was not the official anthem either.

The new song takes Afrobeat as its main reference, with the Colombian artist singing about destiny: “I knew from the day you were born / That you are in the place where you belong.” The chorus, on the other hand, is a mix of languages, starting from Italian with “dai dai” and passing through French (“allez”) or English (“let’s go”).
