Shakira made history this Saturday night by celebrating the largest concert of any Latin artist, bringing together, according to the authorities’ official report, 2 million people on Copacabana beach. ‘Lobacabana’, according to the fans that were distributed around the venue.
The Colombian artist is the third, after Madonna and Lady Gaga, to pack the beach in Rio de Janeiro with hits from an entire career, which are not few. After an hour of waiting, during which the Brazilian sky was illuminated by drones that drew a wolf howling at the full moon, Shakira came out on stage excited: “To think that I arrived here when I was 18, dreaming of singing for you,” she commented.
Shakira maintained Portuguese as her primary language for most of the performance, showing her commitment to the Brazilian audience. The hits, from ‘Waka Waka’ to his much-discussed session with BZRP, spoke for themselves. This gave a complete review of her career, very similar to what was seen on the ‘Women No Longer Cry’ tour, but with some surprises: Anitta accompanied her for ‘Choka Choka’, while Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia and Ivete Sangalo came out on stage to perform some of their classics.
With Veloso, Shakira performed ‘O Leaõzinho’, which she said she used to sing to her son Milan at night. With Bethânia he sang ‘O que é o que é?’, but the party was noticed with the appearances of the Unidos da Tijuca samba school and Ivete Sangalo, with whom he sang ‘País Tropical’.
His session with Bizarrap, so dedicated to Gerard Piqué, closed the concert in style, remembering that the name of the tour itself comes from that song. At another time, Shakira dedicated the concert to all the single mothers in Brazil. “I am one of them,” the Colombian joked.
