Charli XCX teaches ‘Rock Music’: it’s not rock, but it has guitars

Charli However, in an Instagram post, the British artist now clarifies that she never said that “she was making a rock album.”

The video that Charli has uploaded to her Instagram page was recorded last October in a studio in Paris, where she was working on her new album with AG Cook and Finn Keane. The clip shows how the trio builds the song ‘Rock Music’, made up of distorted electric guitars acting as a synthesizer. Charli’s new album will have guitars, but the essence remains electronic pop.

At one point in the video, the camera is pointed at Charli’s phone, on which she is writing the lyrics to the song. “My friends and I / We go out / We take photos / We do things together / Sometimes we cry / We kiss / It’s incest,” it reads.

“This is a video of me making a song called ‘Rock Music’ which is actually not rock music which is funny because I never said I was making a rock record,” the singer wrote in the description of the post.

It is true that he has never explicitly said that his eighth album surrendered to rock music, but he did declare in an interview with British Vogue that the “dance floor is dead” and that “that’s why we make rock.” At another time, months earlier, he also claimed to be in his “Lou Reed era.”
