Yves, experimental and enjoying the bombshell ‘NAIL’

Yves’ elegant pop arrives in Spain this weekend, with the South Korean artist performing tomorrow, May 1, at the Sala Apolo in Barcelona and this Sunday, May 3, at the Sala Wagon in Madrid. We couldn’t stop talking about why ‘NAIL’, the song that gives its name to their latest EP, is the Song of the Day.

Yves was part of the girl group LOONA, whose latest album dates back to 2021. Of course, and with the help of collaborations like PinkPantheress (‘Stars’, ‘Soap’) and Bratty (‘Aibo’), Yves has already surpassed the group’s monthly listeners on Spotify. Far from being pigeonholed within the framework of K-pop, Yves’ pop is universal.

“Stop taking photos of me,” Yves whispers at the beginning of ‘NAIL’, as the song’s beat begins to play. This is made by IOAH, a frequent collaborator of the artist, and its minimalist and experimental character leaves the perfect space for the singer’s melodic verses.

In the chorus, the beat takes a turn towards house as Yves discovers the hook of the song: “Stop thinking about your nails / I have more important things to worry about.” At the same time, the Korean pronunciation of “nail” is the same as “naeil,” which means “tomorrow.” That is why the verses are pure nights of debauchery (“Stop thinking about tomorrow”). Lolo Zouaï, an American singer born in Paris, is in charge of the second verse: “Turning heads everywhere / I have Yves by my side.”
