‘Calypso’ is Guitarrica’s comfort zone, and ours too

Guitarricadelafuente has paid tribute to the ‘Spanish Leather’ stage, a before and after in his career, with his latest release. ‘Calypso’ was precisely written during the tour of that album. Thus, the single has a derivative style, but it is still an interesting listen.

In Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’, Calypso appears as the nymph who keeps the hero on her island for years, offering him immortality and eternal love. At the same time, preventing him from fulfilling his goal of returning home to his family. For Guitarrica, ‘Spanish Leather’ is that stage of glory that he doesn’t want to let go. Maybe that’s why he returns to the jersey beat rhythms that he already used in ‘BABIECA’, or the musical ADHD of singles like ‘Full time papi’.

Just like Odiseo, ‘Calypso’ is the song that doesn’t let Álvaro Lafuente continue on his path and try new things, although it’s hard to imagine his fans complaining about this. Produced by the artist himself along with Phaoc and Carter Lang, the new single talks about fading “with you on this beach” and “appearing on the big screen.” Note the reference to Los Javis.

Despite how short ‘Calypso’ is, the changes in instrumentation and melody are constant. At no point is it as rounded as other songs on ‘Spanish Leather’, but the truth is that there is everything: part acoustic, part electronic, part with autotune, part with choir, calm bridge and final in style. So many things happen that nothing stands out, but at the same time it doesn’t bother either. At least, Guitarrica continues to be a specialist in single phrases: “The spirit is missing and I sit alone in the bathroom” / Blessed youth, it is a poisoned gift.
