Javi Chapela: from Íñigo Quintero and Second to country

At only 24 years old, Javi Chapela is one of the big bets of both Universal and the Girando por Salas cycle. Together with Íñigo Quintero, he wrote one of his most popular songs, ‘Sin tiempo para baile’, and this season he published his first studio album, ‘Future purposes’.

In the promo photos, Chapela bites into an apple because the album’s concept has to do with the ripening of this fruit: the songs go from being green to being enriched with “layers and perspectives.”

Javi Chapela’s sound is based on traditional Spanish pop-rock, currently represented on the charts by people like Arde Bogotá or Siloé. Among his favorite songs, he usually quotes things from U2 and Second from Murcia. There they can take us to singles like ‘El plan’, songs like ‘Fuera de Juego’ or lyrics that “grit your teeth”, like ‘Huesos de cobarde’. “I continue doing therapy for both of us,” she begins by saying.

His most popular song at the moment is ‘Comerte la boca’, in which he appeals to nostalgia and one of the best series in history (“We ordered something while watching ‘Breaking Bad’, that summer will never come back”). Songs as direct as ‘Nuevo romantico’ (which has nothing to do with ‘new romantic’, rather you’ll like it if you like Coque Malla or Sidecars), and the piano ballad ‘I never needed a rival’ also seem to be waiting to be discovered by festival audiences.

Javi Chapela is perceived as curiously comfortable in his more country-like Mumford & Sons register, which expands on ‘Fugitivo’ and ‘El día ater yesterday’, perhaps his best song. And even more curiously, the album closes with a rarity like ‘Future Purposes’, which alternates electronic effects with Kepa Martínez’s sax, leaving many questions about the future of their sound.

As part of the Girando por Salas circuit, and after selling out tickets at the Galileo Galilei in Madrid, Javi Chapela performs in 6 provinces throughout the country during this month of May:
