A few days after the call to boycott Eurovision by more than 1,100 artists and workers in the music sector, Slovenia has announced that it will not broadcast the contest. Not only that, but it will fill the gaps in its programming with several programs dedicated to Palestine. Slovenia, like Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands and Iceland, will not participate in this year’s edition.
Slovenia’s public television has confirmed that it will not broadcast Eurovision this year, but has also revealed the alternative it will offer its viewers. It will be a special program titled ‘Voices for Palestine’ that will be broadcast between Sunday, May 10 and Wednesday, May 20, coinciding with the different Eurovision galas. This will include films, interviews, documentaries and analysis programs.
RTV SLO assures in an official statement that it will continue to “fulfill its public service mission”: “Offer viewers deep, credible and multi-layered content that promotes understanding, dialogue and critical thinking about current global issues.”
The positions of the Netherlands, Ireland and Iceland have also been known. The first of these will broadcast the festival on its general channel, but not on AVROTROS. Iceland will broadcast it on its main channel, while Ireland refused to broadcast it last December, as did Spain.
