KATSEYE have returned with another hymn to ADHD, mixing melodic pop and raver electronica indiscriminately in the same song. However, in this sense ‘PINKY UP’ may be one of their greatest successes. It’s the Song of the Day.
‘PINKY UP’ sits right in the sweet spot between ‘Gnarly’ and ‘Gabriela’, offering as much hype and aggression as it does great melodies. Sophia claims that the song is inspired by punk. However, more than the burning it all part, ‘PINKY UP’ is about living the high life and not giving a shit about everything.
So, Megan sings in the first lines about the end of the world and how she’s going to hook up “with my best new friends.” He wants to “live large, just before everything burns.” Later, Daniela raps about going against the world “shaking your ass in the parking lot” and they continue with the idea of letting yourself go, referencing Socrates himself: “Like I don’t know anything, like Socrates.” They then quote him literally: “The only true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing.”
However, just as the song gets louder and wilder in its chorus, KATSEYE focuses on a symbol of 19th-century etiquette: the raised pinky. It’s a very fun juxtaposition that reaches its highest level in the last seconds of the song, which turns into a real rave.
‘PINKY UP’ is the group’s first song without Manon Bannerman. Everything seems to indicate that there has been drama, after some clips of the choreography were leaked in which she appeared stuck in a hook machine. This scene also appears in the official video, but it stars Daniela. It is not the only reason why fans have been disappointed with the video clip.
“You know it’s bad when not even the most voted comments are praising it,” you can read on YouTube. In addition to not having much cohesion between scenes, there are at least two interruptions that are only due to hidden advertising. In the end, the video dedicated to the choreography is much more worthwhile, much more entertaining, without breaks and with practically the same aesthetics as the original.
