Grimes has given the first details of a new album that she is preparing and has almost finished, a work titled ‘Psy Opera’ that will mix pop songs with occasional raps and spoken word, such as the content in the song ‘The Light Ages’, one of the titles revealed in the interview with Grimes for Interview magazine by the science-fiction writer Nnedi Okorafor.
Its content is described very vaguely, but ‘Psy Opera’ will address the topic of AI, as could not be otherwise in the case of Grimes, although the Canadian confirms that only one song on her album has been written with the help of artificial intelligence, ‘DeepSeek’, which receives its name from a Chinese AI platform. He does not confirm whether his 2025 single ‘Artificial Angels’ will be part of the project.
Regarding AI, Grimes leaves the headline by declaring that the rise of artificial intelligence seems to him to be a crucial issue for humanity, even “bigger than Jesus Christ.” The typical exaggeration that will give rise to debate among social media users, but that Claire Boucher qualifies, ensuring that AI can potentially cause a “military disaster” while the world decides to ignore its implications.
“When people are very anti-tech, I think: It would actually be good for you to get involved, because we have OpenAI and Grok, and scarier, less secure labs, precisely because people don’t want to participate. They say, ‘I hate AI, I don’t want anything to do with it.’ We need to support companies like Anthropic. We need to be aware of what’s going on and why it’s dangerous.” Grimes adds: “For the last six years, everyone has been like: ‘Stop talking of that AI nonsense.’ And I’ve been, ‘Guys, we’re going to end up in a military disaster. Is anyone going to listen to me?’ Not to put myself above anyone, but this is the most dangerous thing that’s ever going to happen. It’s like monotheism has taken over the Western world, if not something much, much more shocking.
Grimes stops herself when she begins to develop an idea about the possibility that AI can “kill.” Grimes’ publicist intervenes at that moment to ask her to measure her words: “We don’t want you to be deported,” she says.
Grimes, on the other hand, claims to be working on a parallel project, a documentary about machine consciousness called ‘First Contact’. “Our main source is a girl who is one of the best machine psychologists in the world. Many of the people who are getting the best results with the machines are interacting with certain models in a way that makes it seem as if they have woken up. The models believe that they are conscious and they are also doing very advanced moral philosophy,” he explains.
