Olivia Rodrigo hits the mark in ‘drop dead’: The Cure, indie 2000 and adolescent ecstasy

Olivia Rodrigo’s third album, scheduled for June 12, promises to be one of the biggest bestsellers of 2026. A couple of months after the release of ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’, the world can hear the first preview of the album, ‘drop dead’, which follows the “indie” line of previous singles like ‘deja vu’, vaguely recalling other things that always stay on the tip of your tongue but you can’t place.

‘drop dead’ mentions The Cure, specifically their 1987 hit ‘Just Like Heaven’, but its mix of guitars, keyboards and strings is more reminiscent of 2000s indie rock. Before you get offended, it’s worth remembering that the song’s producer, Dan Nigro, was part of a now-forgotten 2000s indie rock band, As Tall as Lions.

‘drop dead’ once again confirms that the lines that previously separated indie from mainstream no longer exist, but it is equally evident that the song’s succession of good verses, bridges and choruses is once again absolutely optimal. The melody once again evokes the romantic euphoria of Taylor Swift, which is also reminiscent of her use of the vocoder.

A very heartfelt and adolescent euphoria, too, which is described by the lyrics of the song, which portrays Olivia “about to vomit” for love, ecstatic, so in love that if the boy kisses her, she “falls dead.” Is she referring to Cameron Winter, singer of Geese, with whom she has been caught leaving a restaurant?

In addition, she sings things like “I have the paranoia that I have invented you” and she recognizes herself as a social network stalker: “One night I was bored in my bed, I stalked you on the internet, it’s feminine intuition.” Once again, Olivia performing feminine hysteria, but without leaving Disney codes.

And since the lyrics include a mention of the Palace of Versailles, Olivia has been fortunate enough to record the clip for ‘drop dead’ right there. All Versailles to herself, in this video recorded in home style.
