The Scottish duo Boards Of Canada presents a mysterious clue. Thirteen years after the release of his album “Tomorrow’s Harvest”the group releases “Tape 05”.
The release of the single has occurred completely unexpectedly, without a prior campaign or official communication, through the YouTube channels of both the group itself and Warpthe record label to which they remain linked. The piece is part of an eminently ambient register and is articulated through a careful superposition of ethereal textures, close to shoegaze, that generate a dense but contained soundscape. In the foreground, a delicate harp motif provides melodic clarity and acts as the guiding thread of a subtle, contemplative composition with slow development.
Since 2013, they have been releasing small symbols of life in the form of remixes and reissues of different songs, among which a mix of the renowned DJ NTS. Another possible sign came when a Boards of Canada follower discovered that a website, used in the past to drop hints and that had long been returning 404 errors, was back up. When accessed, it displayed the message “nobody home…”, followed by the same phrase repeated in Morse code.
At the beginning of the month, different fans reported online that they had received VHS tapes marked with Canada’s hexagonal mesh logo. BoC Pages confirmed that these housed an audio that advertised a magazine from a Christian school that stopped publishing in 1991. London, New York and other large cities woke up dressed with posters with content related to the band’s debut album in 1998, “Music Has The Right To Children”; Warp posted a carousel of photos of these posters, but without any other information.
