Karol G has made history by becoming the first Latina to headline Coachella in its 27-year history. In her performance, in which she has claimed all aspects of Latin culture, she has included a speech about this achievement: “I am very happy and proud of this, but at the same time it feels late,” she denounced.
“Many legendary Latin artists came before me, so this is not about me, but about my Latin community and my people,” the Colombian artist continued. She also did not forget the difficult situation that the Latino population in the United States is experiencing with the threat of ICE: “This is also for my Latinos who are fighting in this country, we are with them.”
Karol highlighted the values of “unity, resilience and spirit” in front of the Coachella audience, making it clear that “we want everyone to feel welcome in our culture” and encouraged “everyone to feel proud of where they come from”: “Don’t be afraid, raise those flags,” the Colombian concluded.
Karol G’s show, as expected, was a colorful and spectacular display of dancers and good vibes. Latin culture shone through the presence of a female mariachi group and the salsa version of ‘Tusa’, in which the artist did not hesitate to eliminate Nicki Minaj’s verse.
Daddy Yankee was honored with the outro of ‘Rompe’ after ‘Gatúbela’, but he was not the only old school artist to appear. Wisin accompanied the Colombian on stage for ‘Saoco’, ‘Mayor que yo’, ‘Pam Pam’ and ‘Rakata’. In addition, towards the end of the show he performed a version of ‘Mi tierra’ by Gloria Estefan.
Mariah Angeliq, Becky G and Greg Gonzalez of Cigaretter After Sex also had their moment on stage. With the latter, Karol G premiered an unreleased song. From the lyrics, it seems dedicated to her ex-partner Feid: “One more day I get up, have breakfast and it doesn’t taste like anything” / “Since you’re not here, my day has gotten complicated again,” she sang.
In the rest of the day, David Byrne also sent a message of unity to the Coachella audience, ensuring that “love and kindness are a form of resistance.” On the other hand, Camila Cabello made a surprise appearance at Young Thug’s show to perform ‘Havana’, as did Underscores during Oklou’s performance.
