From ‘La joia’ to ‘Más cara’ (mask?), Bad Gyal’s second album is evidently continuous and, at the same time, is presented as a progress with respect to the debut, going from a gem to be polished? to an opulent evolution, effectively “more expensive”: more developed, more ambitious, more escalating. The evolution of Bad Gyal is evident in their current tour, but also in the variety of styles presented by the potential singles, of which there are once again a handful to choose from, apart from those that have already been released.
Bad Gyal’s tour opens with the R&B of ‘Un cora y ya’, which is reminiscent of one of its influences, Jennifer López of the 2000s, and continues with ‘Más cara’, which on the album functions as the typical exciting introduction, with suspended chords, opening the door to the mystery of the new album.
Bad Gyal has conceived ‘Más cara’ also as a tribute to the legends who came before, not as a groundbreaking work that seeks to renew the Afro-Latin styles that Farelo usually explores in his music – mainly reggaeton and dancehall -, but to place where they deserve and belong to some of those pioneers, such as the Puerto Ricans Jenny “La Sexy Voz” and J Álvarez, who appear in ‘The initiative’ and ‘Hoy te touches’, two of the cuts based on a primal reggaeton sound.
Among the novel explorations in Bad Gyal’s career, such as the electro-guaracha of ‘Fuma’, the Haitian kompa of ‘Última noche’ or the merengazo of ‘Noticia de Yesterday’, in the end the most classic cuts stand out. Among them it is worth mentioning especially ‘Choque’, the last single presented prior to the release of the album, which is gradually becoming the new big hit of this era, after ‘Da Me’. At the moment, it has already reached the top 8 in Spain.
‘Choque’ is precisely another of the classic cuts from ‘Más cara’, combining a classic reggaeton bass drum with the collaboration of fellow Puerto Rican Chencho Corleone. Lately claimed by Bad Bunny, Corleone is, by sound, an absolute precursor of Ozuna, who also appears on the album.
‘Choque’ is another club track by Bad Gyal that gets to the point in its disco intention, although its hooks stand out above the average of the album, containing several in verses, choruses and post-choruses that build one of the clear singles of the album. Farelo and Corleone share the spotlight in phrases like: “And this party has already started wow, wow, wow, wow / Afterwards we won’t remember ‘na’, na’, na’” or “They’re missing a condom, weed to get it high / In case we have to do it tonight.” But it is Corleone who has the best hook of the song thanks to his high vocal range; The verse: “You talk, how you talk to me / If you use those words then let’s go back” elevates the song even further, reinforcing its addictive component.
