Zara Larsson, who is preparing a remix of her album ‘Midnight Sun’ in the style of the ‘brat’ remix album, only with female artists, has given an interview to The Guardian in which she has talked about her great commercial year and also her political and social commitment, defending Chappell Roan as a victim of misogyny and Robyn as a victim of ageism.
At one point in the conversation, Larsson says that her label, Epic Records, wants her to release a single from the ‘Midnight Sun’ remix album before releasing it, and that she doesn’t agree: “It ruins the project and the specific roll-out I have planned.” Larsson believes that her label is too concerned with numbers and indicates that she has already overcome the need to constantly try to be number 1. And he declares: «I am no longer interested in the game of lists. “No one cares about the charts except people in the industry and maybe Taylor Swift fans.”
Her words have not taken long to circulate online, with some interpreting them as a covert criticism of the author of ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, who is known for her marketing strategies, releasing dozens of different versions of the same album.
Perhaps fearing the wave of Swiftie hate that has recently affected artists like Bruno Mars, Larsson has cut it short by clarifying his words in an Instagram story, clarifying that in them he was doing nothing other than praising Taylor Swift: “I said that no one looks at the lists except people in the industry and Taylor Swift fans because no one plays their cards like Taylor Swift. She is literally the one who does it best and everyone knows it. My words are not the joke you think they are.
Zara has also clarified that she is interested, in part, in the charts: “I said that because I feel that right now I have a cultural value that I have never had before, but I am not yet in a position to influence the charts in any way.” Larsson added that he will try to release different covers of his next album and has also clarified that “you can be a great artist and not be on the lists”, although he has indicated that, of course, he wants to be number 1, begging the public to make his single ‘Midnight Sun’ number 1.
