Muse have formally presented the title and date of their next album, which will be the tenth in their discography. This one is titled ‘The Wow! Signal’ and will be available on June 26. After ‘Unravelling’, which mixed electronics with metal guitars, the British group has also presented what would be the lead single of this new era. ‘Be With You’ is a full-fledged “more is more”, but it doesn’t fill all the gaps.
The epic for the sake of the epic. Muse haven’t been the most inspired band in recent years, especially after the ‘Will of the People’ fiasco. On their next project, Matt Bellamy’s group will also take on an ambitious concept, describing the LP in a press release as “a mix of cosmic mystery, existential hope and the exciting possibility of contact with something much bigger than ourselves.”
The two singles from ‘The Wow! Signal’ are as ambitious as this promotional description. Especially ‘Be With You’, which begins with a huge church organ and Bellamy singing about his light being “absorbed” and the search for a “higher power.” The percussion surrenders to the electronics, and it is not until the last third of the song that we hear the guitars. The structure of the song, until the end, is reminiscent of U2’s greatest anthems, but without the same emotional impact.
The biggest fault for this lies with the lyrics. “I will not bow to the universe / I can break its curse / And build a symphony,” Bellamy sings just before the chorus, as classic as it is generic. “I wish to fall in the sun / It can’t be with anyone / It has to be with you,” he says just before the final solo. This leads to an explosion of basses, synthesizers and guitars that, yes, will be the delight of all festivals.
