Why the stairs are such magical places for Anadie

Anadie, author of such beautiful songs as ‘Forgiveness X Not Answer’, is being one of the revelation projects of the season. The artist from Malagaña has gone through Sansan and we will also see her in Mallorca Live Festival. Urban sounds and Synthpop are some of the influences of their music, as perceived in that little hit called ‘Bakete’ with Delgao.

Before ‘Bokete’ just published an EP, between the deafness and romanticism, called ‘Love, beasts and stairs’ … because the stairs are an issue that has always obsessed him. Anadie chooses to talk about stairs in our Meister of the Week section Commissioned by Jägermusic. “Magical” places in which to give a first kiss, throw a dust or receive a tragic news about a loved one.

Why have you chosen to talk about stairs in this section?

Because they seem genuinely magical sites and are usually inhabited by wise creatures. I have had the best conversations on the stairs outside the chilies at dawn. Reconciliations, discussions, laughs. Even sometimes they are simply places to sit and observe the play that takes place in front of you. In summary, they are places where life or resting from it.

What important things have happened to you on some stairs?

Positive experiences on a ladder: a first kiss, a dust, a revealing conversation, an encounter with friends, or a break along the way.
Less positive and terrible: a break, the news of a deceased friend, a terrible yellow.

Have you then had transcendental conversations about life, death, politics?

Sometimes the majestic of a ladder is to remember that nothing is so important. Sit in a place of passage, inevitably dirty and unvolved and feel it a safe place. That you can have a stupid, trivial and fun talk without the need to be in the tension of showing that you are an extremely complex being (that we are all) and enjoy.
On the other hand, I also enjoy a divine phenomenon on those party nights where you leave to smoke to a step. The absolute anonymity. Conversations occur in which you have nothing to lose and you show yourself without complexes, without Autoboicot and with the honesty of knowing that no one will remember what you said. It is more there when an innocently deep conversation occurs. Both imaginary fill me equally.

When you spent this theme, the typical American movie staircase, Manhattan type, has immediately come to mind. But we are talking about stairs of Spanish floors, right? How are those stairs that you are talking to us? With patio, without patio? Can you describe them in any way?

I live in a very high part of my city. Arriving almost to the mountain. Then access to access is an ecosystem of stairs of narrow white lime walls. There is always a shadow to protect itself and privacy for particular miracles to occur. There are several stairs of ladder of different color but practically equally narrow. Sometimes there are bottles and potato bags to end that some insensitive leave deliberately there. Unhappy poor people who are not aware that they are in sacred terrain!

You have an EP that is called just ‘love, beasts and stairs’ and on the cover some stairs come out. The cover’s inspiration looks like a horror movie. Has horror cinema inspired you? What movies?

I think that all these classic horror movie films that are already part of our collective unconscious have influenced my profuse respect for the stairs. So I can venture to say that for Bay Morales, the artist who made the cover, has also been unconscious inspiration.

There are endless items and videos on the network about the relationship between horror movies and the stairs, very related, of course, with American cinema: ‘At the end of the staircase’, ‘The exorcist’, ‘The glow’, psychosis … have this new cinema of classic or most new horror, even if they are not terror? Sometimes it scares what can be “at the end of a ladder.”

It is such a poetic scenario and rich in metaphors that the stairs can be used in chilling films and in love stories. I have seen all my life in those and other films, how the key moment of the plot gravitated around some steps. It may not consciously, but all that cinematographic wealth inspires and influences ideas around the EP.

The stairs have also made us think of love, of course. An favorite movie or series about neighbors, such as ‘Friends’, ‘Temptation lives above’, whatever it is?

In ‘How I met your mother’, there is a scene in which Ted finds Marshall crying in the rain on the steps of the main door of the building. His girlfriend has just left him and he was not able to enter the apartment and was waiting on the steps outside.

The songs of the EP ‘love, beasts and stairs’ can have danceable rhythms, but in general they are as sad and discharged as ‘Tequila and arrows’. Another is called ‘sad on the street’. In another you «turn off a cigar in the
Sien and you lie on the train track ». At that time, the stairs bring you to mind rather sad things, bad memories?

In ‘Cigar in the temple’ in particular the sweet waiting prevails. Sit down to wait for something or someone arrives and try not to be able to do their way. In ‘Sad on the street’, the song recounts a party night in which Sebas and I ended up on a step having been overwhelmed by heartbreak and jealousy. So in general, the stairs are a bittersweet resource on the disc.

With what admired artist would you sit down animatedly on stairs?

I think that with Amaia I could have a conversation at the same time interesting and fun.

Any favorite song on stairs from other artists? Some of those who have touched this issue are the elite, Javiera Mena, Nathy Peluso, Mac Miller, Lorde and of course, Led Zeppelin.

I have precisely burned the ‘staircase’ of Javiera Mena. Flipa me.
