JPEGMAFIA may have one of the best albums of 2024 on his hands. The American rapper and producer is one of the most dazzling talents on the alternative scene and a critical darling. ‘SCARING THE HOES’, his collaborative album with Danny Brown, is the highest-rated album of 2023 on Rate Your Music, just ahead of Sufjan Stevens’ ‘Javelin’. ‘SIN MIEDO’ marks a different and exciting path for his new LP. It is the Song of the Day.
Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks started rapping over his own beats because, in his words, “absolutely nobody wanted them.” Time has proved him right, becoming one of the most surprising producers in hip hop today, to the point of receiving a call from Kanye to collaborate on the production of ‘VULTURES’. Throughout his career he has left pieces as unique as his cover of ‘Call Me Maybe’ or the chameleonic ‘Jesus Forgive Me, I Am A Thot’.
Always an alternative, Peggy has gradually been seducing a wider audience. ‘SIN MIEDO’ shows a change of focus in her production, incorporating elements of techno and club into her well-known rap style. Somehow, she manages to successfully mix all this with hard rock guitars and a pounding sample of 2 Live Crew’s ‘Hoochie Mama’ («Big booty hoes, up wit it»). ‘don’t rely on other men’, the first single from her upcoming LP, followed the same vein.
Peggy is also known for his quirky lyrics and ‘SIN MIEDO’ is no different. “Putting all these drugs / Coke up her ass, RIP Aaron Carter,” the New York rapper sings with his astonishing energy. JPEGMAFIA will be passing through the Sala Apolo in Barcelona on January 24, his only stop in Spain in 2025, as part of the ‘Lay Down My Life’ world tour.
