There is not much news that reaches us about the legendary Tom Waitsbut it is a pleasure to celebrate that he shares a new and very intimate version of “Get Behind The Mule”.
The release of this “Spiritual Version” of Tom Waits’ “Get Behind The Mule” is intended to celebrate two things: the anniversary of the birth of the ANTI record label and, at the same time, the twenty-five years of “Mule Variations”, one of the most interesting albums of Waits’ career and a work that introduced the American artist to new generations while giving a new twist to a career with countless masterpieces up to that time.
In fact, ANTI was born as a label especially to release “Mule Variations” in 1999, by Brett Gurevitz (member of Bad Religion and founder of Epitaph) and Andy Kaulkin. In this alternative version of the most emblematic song of the album, Waits combines his usual raw emotion with a gospel spirit that is accompanied only by a Wurlitzer. The lyrics even change some phrases, turning this story of murder into something even more intense.
