Timothée Chalamet will not be EsDeeKid, but he will be a marketing genius. The actor’s last weeks on the Internet have been marked by one of the most improbable and random hoaxes we can remember, with hundreds of users theorizing about the possibility that EsDeeKid, a British rapper, and Chalamet were the same person. Obviously, that hasn’t been the case, but it all ended with the strangest musical collaboration of the year.
The remix of ‘4 Raws’, released this summer, with Timothée Chalamet has achieved 115 million views in just 24 hours on Instagram, becoming an advertising masterpiece. The person who made the first TikTok of the trend that linked EsDeeKid with Timothée Chalamet was not aware of the incredible favor he was doing for the Liverpool rapper.
The theory made no sense from its very conception, although it is easy to say why it caught on so much. EsDeeKid, to this day, still does not show his face. Whenever he appears publicly, he wears a balaclava. Therefore, it has been the only case in which the phrase “they look alike in the whites of their eyes” really made sense. The similarity in looks is undeniable.
From there, nothing to see. The subject of schedules, locations, the rapper’s Liverpool accent… We all knew that it was impossible for Timothée Chalamet to be living a double life as a Hollywood actor and underground rapper. What we didn’t see coming was that Timothée Chalamet was going to use all this to his advantage to promote ‘Marty Supreme’.
Even before the aforementioned collaboration, Chalamet was proving to be a master of promotion. There was the fake meeting that was uploaded to the YouTube channel of the production company A24 and in which Chalamet appeared throwing hilarious ideas to his marketing team. The most remembered will always be the “corrosive” orange color to differentiate it from the flat pink of ‘Barbie’, which has ended up materializing in real life.
When asked about the rumors of his secret identity in various interviews, Chalamet did not deny anything. On the contrary, he entered the rag: “No comments… Everything will be revealed in due time,” seemed to be the only answer that came out of the actor’s mouth. At first this was a source of confusion: Is he fueling rumors simply to keep people talking about him? Do you have something prepared in hand? Is Timothée Chalamet really a rapper from Liverpool?
We now know that Chalamet and EsDeeKid, who may be familiar to many simply because of their association with the actor, had a remix on their hands. It is not the first time that Chalamet flirts with rap, having multiple friends in the world and having rapped under the pseudonym Lil Timmy Tim. He was even knighted by Lil B himself.
In the song, Chalamet draws on hip hop clichés, rapping about drinking lean or all the models he has sex with. The expected. However, he is also capable of leaving some phrases that are also spreading like wildfire on social networks: «Trying to accumulate 100 million, my girl has a billion / What the hell? What a wonderful feeling,” he raps, referring to his partner, Kylie Jenner.
Chalamet mentions the title of his latest film, ‘Marty Supreme’, up to 4 times in his verse. Only he can go from being nominated for an Oscar for playing Bob Dylan to having the entire Internet think he’s posing as an underground rapper from Liverpool. They will study it in universities.
