Timberlake speaks to reporters after pleading guilty

“This is going to ruin the tour” has been one of the iconic phrases to come out of pop culture in 2024. It came out of Justin Timberlake’s mouth a few months ago, when the singer was arrested in the town of Sag Harbor, New York, for drunk driving after failing a breathalyzer test at midnight on June 18. Timberlake ran a stop sign and swerved out of his lane shortly after getting in the car after a night of partying. Timberlake admitted that he had had “one martini.” His police sketch was soon made public.

Timberlake has now pleaded guilty to drunk driving. As part of his sentence, Timberlake must pay a $500 fine with a $260 surcharge and perform 25 hours of community service at a nonprofit organization of his choice. In addition, his driver’s license will be suspended for 90 days.

Following the sentencing, Timberlake has spoken to the media to publicly acknowledge his “mistake” and urge the public to never drive after drinking. “I try to hold myself to a very high standard, for myself, and this was not the case,” Timberlake said. “Even if you only had one drink, don’t get behind the wheel. There are plenty of alternatives. Call a friend. Take an Uber. There are plenty of ride-hailing apps. Take a taxi. I made this mistake and I hope that anyone watching and listening to this can learn from this mistake, I certainly have.”
