This is what vikini sounds like: the Canut collaborate, Hidrogenesse produce

vikini are the perfect discovery for lovers of the vintage and dreamy 50s aesthetic, but also for Hidrogenesse fans. They don’t come from nowhere: Sally Canut is the daughter of Mauro Canut, who collaborates on the group’s compositions with her brother Nacho. Of course, nepobabies or not, vikini’s songs are gems in their own right.

Signed in El Volcán, Sally and Martina only have three songs published. According to their artist file, these are “friends since school” and are “just turned 18 years old:” They have composed several songs that will be published in the coming months with the collaboration of Nacho and Mauro Canut and the production of Hidrogenesse. The note also refers to “the survival of female duos in Spanish pop.”

‘calendariogris’ is the group’s latest and melancholic single, perfect for crying on a sunny summer day. Both in this one and in ‘tumba’ and ‘lo RARO’, the Catalan duo’s production is filled with synthesizers, as is normal, but it also takes a lofi and vintage path. ‘tumba’, specifically, is between the most Disney Amaia and a home demo of the most bucolic Sufjan Stevens.

“Once, you promised to love me forever / It must be that you’ve forgotten / I don’t know what to think,” they sing in this song. They also sing about coincidences, “embrace what scares me” and “despise what I like” in ‘the WEIRD thing’, which if you’re wondering, is “that I’m happy.”

As indicated on the label’s page, these songs will be part of their debut EP, scheduled for sometime in 2026. If that project is as good as what these songs tease, vikini will be one of the most pleasant surprises of the year.
