This is what ‘The Romantic’ should have sounded like: 54 Ultra’s ‘Turnaround’

If Bruno Mars’ goal was to make an album with nods to the Latin music of the 70s, he should have paid more attention to 54 Ultra. ‘Turnaround’, the latest single by John Anthony Rodríguez, takes these same influences, managing to be much more romantic and organic than any song on ‘The Romantic’. It’s the Song of the Day.

The 54 Ultra project began to be successful on the Internet. There is nothing strange after listening to ‘Heaven Knows’ or ‘Where Are You’, viral on social networks thanks to their retro aesthetics and catchy melodies. Using cream colors, the New Jersey artist managed to attract enough attention to work on the composition and production of two songs from Kali Uchis’ latest album, ‘Sincerely’: ‘All I Can Say’ and ‘Whispers of the Wind’.

The vintage and sensual sound of these songs is back in ‘Turnaround’, but it is one of the artist’s first songs that does not have a rehashed flavor. Rodríguez sings about a love interest who wants to see him change: “I can’t wait for you / But I know that’s what you want me to do.”

One of the best aspects of ‘Turnaround’ is its instrumentation, full of layers and details that appear little by little and that is reminiscent of both Latin rock and R&B of the 70s. If the song was already sexy at first, the trumpet and guitar arrangements take it to the next level. It’s music for having babies, textbook.
