The VMAs crown Taylor again and try to save Katy Perry

Taylor Swift is once again the most nominated artist and the one who has won the most awards at the MTV VMAs ceremony. Not as many as last year, but enough to repeat the feat. The American has won 7 awards from 12 nominations, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Song of the Summer.

Swift has now surpassed Beyoncé as the artist with the most VMA wins in history, with 30 in total, compared to Beyoncé’s 27. It’s all about breaking records, as Swift also becomes the first artist in history to win the top award, Video of the Year, five times.

On the other hand, and after a disagreement with the photographers on the red carpet, Chappell Roan has won the astronaut award for Breakthrough Artist. In addition, ‘Espresso’ has been named Song of the Year, with Sabrina Carpenter wearing the same dress that Madonna wore at the 1991 Oscars. Eminem and Megan Thee Stallion have tied with two awards each. Specifically, Best Hip-Hop Song and Best Visual Effects for ‘Houdini’, and Best Art Direction (‘BOA’) and Best Trending Video (‘Mamushi’) for Megan.

Additionally, Anitta took home the award for Best Latin Song, Dua Lipa for Best Choreography, Ariana Grande for Best Cinematography, Benson Boone for Best Alternative Song, SZA for Best R&B and LISA for Best K-Pop Song.

Katy Perry literally flew in her performance as the winner of the Vanguard Award. As she said in her acceptance speech, she did it all on the first day of her period: “Can you believe it?” The pop star performed a medley of 10 songs, one per minute, which included ‘Dark Horse’, ‘ET’, ‘Firework’, ‘Teenage Dream’ and ‘California Gurls’, among other hits. She performed ‘I’m His, He’s Mine’ for the first time, alongside Doechii, and reserved the grand finale for ‘Lifetimes’. Despite everything, some boos could be heard during her speech, although that was not the majority sentiment.

In more standout performances, Eminem repeats what he did at the 2000 VMAs, multiplying himself for ‘Houdini’ and ‘Somebody Save Him’. Chappell Roan has set the stage on fire with ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ in one of the best performances of the gala, dressed as a medieval knight with a matching crossbow. Sabrina Carpenter has also shined in the medley of her three big hits: ‘Please Please Please’, ‘Taste’ and ‘Espresso’. There has also been a movie-worthy kiss with an alien.

The UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, also enjoyed performances by Camila Cabello, presenting ‘GODSPEED’ from the deluxe edition of ‘C,XOXO’, Shawn Mendes and his new ‘Nobody Knows’ and Anitta alongside Fat Joe and DJ Khaled in their latest collaboration, ‘Paradise’. She was also accompanied by Tiago PZK in ‘Alegría’ to close with ‘Savage Funk’.

Halsey, Rauw Alejandro, LISA (without Rosalía), Megan Thee Stallion, Karol G, Lenny Kravitz, GloRilla, LL Cool J, Benson Boone, Teddy Swims and Jessie Murph have also had their moment of glory on stage.
