The thousand lives of ‘Unwritten’ by Natasha Bedingfield

Natasha Bedingfield is experiencing a revival similar to that of Sophie Ellis-Bextor with ‘Unwritten’, her famous hit from 2006. ‘Unwritten’ is now one of the 30 songs with the highest number of plays globally on Spotify and its success is making it especially noticeable in three Anglo-Saxon countries where ‘Unwritten’ is already an official hit on the charts.

We are talking, first of all, about the United Kingdom, where ‘Unwritten’ has risen to number 13 on the official singles chart and where it will probably enter the top 10 this coming Friday; and also from Australia and Ireland. In the first country, ‘Unwritten’ peaked at 26th place, and has now reached 15th place. In Ireland, his peak was 9th place, and now he has risen to 7th.

Curiously, ‘Unwritten’ is one of Natasha Bedingfield’s few singles that has achieved a better position in the United States (number 5 in 2006) than in the United Kingdom (originally it did not go beyond number 6).

The reason ‘Unwritten’ is being played again is its appearance in the movie ‘Anyone but You’. Released at the end of 2023, ‘Anyone but You’ stars two fashionable actors: Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. The use of ‘Unwritten’ in ‘Anyone but You’ has caused the song to go viral on TikTok, and the rest is history.

It’s not the first time that ‘Unwritten’ resurfaces on the charts. Although ‘Unwritten’ was a worldwide hit in 2006, especially in the United States, where it was the most played song of that year, ‘Unwritten’ was released two years earlier, in 2004, on Bedingfield’s debut album, also titled ‘Unwritten’. . In fact, it was neither the first nor the second single from that album, but the third. In 2006, the use of ‘Unwritten’ as the theme song for the MTV series ‘The Hills’ exploded her popularity.

In Spain, ‘Unwritten’ has not yet been revived on the charts. In our country, ‘Unwritten’ reached 18th position and became popular after appearing in a shampoo advertisement. ‘Unwritten’ did reach number 1 on Los 40 Principales in 2007. Curiously, Bedingfield performed in 2023 at the first edition of BRAVA Madrid, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor will do so this year.

Natasha and Sophie are still united by one more fact: ‘Unwritten’ is a song co-written by Danielle Brisebois, who was a member of the New Radicals with Gregg Alexander, co-writer of ‘Murder On the Dancefloor’.
