The Prosecutor’s Office files the investigation into Julio Iglesias

The Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court has decided to archive the investigation into Julio Iglesias, as he had requested. The singer had been denounced by two former employees for human trafficking and sexual assault, causing a huge impact on the Spanish population and making headlines around the world.

The Public Ministry considers that there is a “lack of competence” on the part of the Spanish courts. Therefore, no complaint will be filed against the artist.

The Prosecutor’s Office considers that the Spanish courts lack jurisdiction to examine the case, as the events have occurred exclusively abroad, exactly in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, where the two complainants worked for him in 2021. The decree indicates that “the events must be prosecuted by the directly competent States, as this is where they occurred and where the evidence is found”, it highlights that the complainants are not Spanish nor did they travel with Julio Iglesias to Spain, nor is there a “personal or territorial link with our country.” In addition, Iglesias “He neither resides in Spain, nor maintains his center of life, interests, activity in this country.”

The Prosecutor’s Office also alludes to a 2014 reform of universal jurisdiction, according to which Spain can only intervene “if the directly competent State cannot or does not want to investigate and this is proven”, something that has not happened.

As reported by El Diario, the newspaper that published the exclusive after three years of investigation, Women’s Link Worldwide, the organization that legally advises these women, Laura and Rebeca, assures that there will be more legal actions. The lawyers have also stated that the reported facts have not been assessed and describe the resolution of the Public Ministry as “regrettable.”

In recent days, Julio Iglesias has published WhatsApp messages exchanged with his two former employees as a defense, causing many to wonder if it had been a good idea.
