The definitive end of MTV Europe, awards included?

The MTV VMAs recently left us with a good string of iconic moments. Sabrina Carpenter, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Tate McRae, Doja Cat performed at the channel’s ceremony… a lot of A-list artists. But everything indicates that, on the contrary, the MTV Europe Awards have come to a definitive end.

The MTV Europe are usually held in the first days of November. This has been the case every year between 1994 and 2024, except for the 2023 ceremony, when the awards were canceled due to the war in Gaza.

However, already in February 2025 and after the normal edition last year, it was reported that the MTV Europe ceremony was among the things that were going to be paralyzed, due to the merger of Paramount with Skydance, which was going to translate into cuts and layoffs. This was reported a few months ago by The Hollywood Reporter and since then nothing more has been known. No one is reporting on whether the awards will return in 2026 or are gone forever.

Although in recent years they have blended in with the American awards, the MTV Europe Awards gave great moments to a more alternative audience in their beginnings. The first recipients of the Best Song award were Youssou N’Dour and Neneh Cherry for ‘7 Seconds’ (Bravo!), Cranberries for ‘Zombie’ and Oasis for ‘Wonderwall’.

This weekend, BBC announced that they are going to close 5 of the channels linked to MTV Europe through the British affiliate. According to the BBC, the channels that are going to close their services in the United Kingdom are MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live HD. They would stop operating on December 31, although the chain is neither confirming nor denying anything. The American press is beginning to wonder if American MTV will not be the next to fall, pointing to the end of an era.

In Spain, MTV’s music channels are currently still available on the operators Movistar Plus+ and Orange TV. This summer they abandoned the Vodafone platform.
