In January 2025, Los Javis announced ‘La pelota negra’ and, a few months later, we learned that Penélope Cruz and Guitarricadelafuente would be part of its cast. By the way, Yenesi also has a role, while Judeline offers a cameo.
Today we finally know that ‘The Black Ball’ has become the chosen candidate to represent Spain at the Oscars, beating out ‘Los Domingos’, by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, and ‘El ser loved’, by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. Perhaps the election was seen coming, since ‘The Black Ball’ has won Best Director at Cannes and, furthermore, Netflix has clearly opted for it.
In addition, Guitarricadelafuente could have another opportunity to step on the Oscars thanks to ‘The Snow’, a song he composed with Raül Refree for the film. Refree, you may remember, co-produced Álvaro Lafuente’s debut album, ‘La cantera’.
‘The snow’ plays at the end of ‘La pelota negra’ and will be published this Friday, September 18. The preview reveals intense piano and string arrangements. According to El País, the song is entered in the race for the Oscar for Best Original Song, so ‘La Bola Negra’ could also have options in that category.
‘The Black Ball’ will hit Spanish cinemas on September 25. In the United States it will be released in theaters on October 16, before arriving on Netflix on December 2.
