Taylor Swift has released the official music video for ‘Opalite’ through the Apple Music and Spotify Premium platforms. This decision is due to the fact that YouTube views no longer count towards Billboard’s count since January of this year. The video for ‘Opalite’ will be uploaded to YouTube on Sunday, February 8.
The clip, directed and written by Swift herself, recreates the style of 90s romantic comedies, resulting in a mini-movie. The video for ‘Opalite’ tells the love adventures of Swift, who abandons her relationship with a “rock” to start dating actor Domnhall Gleeson, with whom she falls in love thanks to an “opalite” spray.
As Swift reveals at the end of the ‘Opalite’ video, her concept arose during an interview Swift did on Graham Norton’s show, which airs on British television. There, Swift met Domnhall Gleeson, who during the talk joked about appearing in a Swift video. Also sitting on that sofa were Cillian Murphy, Lewis Capaldi, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith, and all of them – including Graham Norton – appear in the video.
The video for ‘Opalite’ shows Taylor Swift at her most Katy Perry. Taylor, by the way, has confirmed that the video was shot using analogue photographic film (celluloid), rather than digital cameras.
‘Opalite’ was the obvious second single from ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, as it is the most listened to song on the album after ‘The Fate of Ophelia’. In a JENESAISPOP poll, ‘Opalite’ received 65% of the votes compared to the rest of the songs.
