Tate McRae has achieved one of the most viral songs in recent weeks. And, perhaps even to his own surprise, he has done it with one of the funniest songs in his discography. With more than 150 million plays on Spotify in its first month, and entering the top 100 of Spanish Singles, ‘greedy’ can already be considered a success.
However, the song also leads the artist to distance herself from what had stood her out until now. Although in his first album ‘i used to think i could fly’ he managed to get noticed ‘she’s all i wanna be’, a song whose production would invite you to dance in any club, the great appreciation was reserved for the most vulnerable songs like ‘chaotic’ or ‘feel like shit’.
Using all the ingredients needed to make a great radio-friendly pop song, ‘greedy’ is an upbeat single about female empowerment and self-esteem. Tate McRae sings to a boy that she would “love herself first,” with that being her main priority. With a playful air, McRae ends her chorus by saying “this won’t end well,” to show her how little he cares about her.
Its only two minutes of duration seem millimetrically designed for TikTok. In fact, it is on that platform where ‘greedy’ was born, following the recent trend of posting snippets of the song on TikTok to generate expectations before the release. The duration, however, does not deprive it of its three choruses and its corresponding bridge, something atypical in such short songs.
The singer’s new single not only distances her from her biggest hit, ‘you broke me first’, but also distances her from the sounds that other emerging artists such as Olivia Rodrigo or Billie Eilish are exploring. Will you continue this path for now?
