Five months after performing at the Tiny Desk, one of the world’s largest musical showcases, Tarta Relena, the duo from Barcelona known for their recovery of traditional vocal styles from the past and for singing in languages as unlikely as Latin and Ladino, announces a new recording project. ‘És cuestión’, the new album by the duo formed by Helena Ros and Marta Torrella, will be released on October 18.
In this case, it is a work that “flirts with the notions of tragic thought” populated by “various protagonists who find themselves facing unstoppable consequences, known and unknown at the same time.” It is also a “conceptual mix of what fate has in store for us, our thirst for knowledge and the inability to integrate future versions of ourselves.”
In ‘És cuestión’, Tarta Relena sings in “Catalan, Castilian, Latin, Judeo-Spanish (Ladino) and Italian”, mixing her recovery of ancestral melodies with electronic productions, through 11 new cuts. It will be her third album, after ‘Fiat Lux’ (2022).
The first single from ‘És cuestión’ is another gem from Tarta Relena: ‘Si veriash a la rana’ is based on a traditional Sephardic Turkish melody, on which Tarta Relena has written lyrics inspired by the “biblical story of Jephthah.” As if ‘Si veriash a la rana’ weren’t enough, its video evokes images from the 1969 film ‘El color de la granada’… the same one that inspired Lady Gaga a few years ago.
Tarta Relena is about to premiere the live show they have prepared for their new album on October 2 in Krakow. The duo will then be in Manresa on October 12 and in Reus on October 25. In November they will offer shows in Sare, Bogotá, Madrid, Barcelona and Girona.
