SZA daydreams in the floating ‘Kitchen’

SZA has set out this year to redefine the concept of a deluxe album. The expanded edition of ‘SOS’, his 2022 album, published this Friday, in the last hours of the day, does not include four bonus tracks to please fans. Instead, it is a new 15-cut album added to the original. In total, adding new and old songs, “LANA” reaches 38 tracks.

The songs included on “LANA” include ‘Drive’ and ‘Crybaby’, released together in a single music video starring Ben Stiller. There is also ’30 for 30′ with Kendrick Lamar, a song that already has more than a million listens on Spotify.

Another of the standout songs on “LANA” is ‘Kitchen’, the song that samples ‘Voyage to Atlantis’ by the Isley Brothers. It’s the Song of the Day for today, Sunday.

‘Voyage to Atlantis’ has been sampled dozens of times by R&B and hip-hop artists such as Jay-Z and R. Kelly in ‘It Ain’t Personal, Ja Rule in ‘Daddy’s Little Baby’ or Trina in ‘I’ll Always’. Its sensual, floating and dreamy sound continues to inspire new compositions.

On ‘Kitchen’, SZA uses the drums, electric guitar, bass, keyboard and synth foundation of ‘Voyage to Atlantis’ without altering it too much. Solana, above all, adds a beautiful vocal melody that seems to float in the air, hand in hand with the music of the Isley Brothers. The lyrics, however, are bittersweet: SZA has broken up with a person who has “abused” her, but she can’t help but miss him. SZA remembers the moments when they “sang and danced” in the kitchen, moments that make her “think about forgiving him.” In ‘Kitchen’, SZA revels in the beautiful memories of that relationship, but she doesn’t forget the bad.
