‘Stereo’ is the electro banger with which to meet Cannelle

Cannelle is a 20-year-old model from Marseille, France, who has recently made the leap into music. Curiously, after collaborating with important brands and fashion media, the cover of her album ‘CINNA’ seems almost more typical of an outsider artist, betting on ugliness and amateur aesthetics rather than editorial excellence.

Music, however, is serious business. The electro synths of ‘Restless Dreams’ serve as an overwhelming introduction; ‘Dis-Moi’ is much more forceful than Cannelle’s inclusion on hyperpop playlists suggests; ‘French Kiss’ recovers the spirit of the first Justice and the first Crystal Castles and ‘BB Blue’ is another great single with which to discover this artist.

The use of French is appreciated, on the other hand, in an industry still too obsessed with Anglophone. Cannelle, who works hand in hand with London producer Oscar Scheller, mixes French and English in another of the standout singles from his album, ‘Stereo’, today’s Song of the Day.

‘Stereo’ is an electro banger from Cannelle dedicated to the life of fame and glamour. “La lumière et les flashes, c’est c’que j’adore,” he sings, almost paraphrasing Kim Petras. In this own runway towards stardom, Cannelle recognizes herself within a modern trend (“je ride la nouvelle vague, je suis la mère”), mystifies herself by describing herself as an angel (“Oréoles sur ma tête comme dans un rêve”) and postulates herself as queen of the disco: she claims that “no one can stop her.”

At the end, just when you think the song can’t go any higher, the production hits the accelerator and explodes into a maddening flurry of synthetic punches and gunshots. Fans of Slayyyter, Charli xcx or Kim Petras herself, the latest, don’t miss it.
