Loreen had two options for her next project: repeat the ‘Tattoo’ formula or take a risk. In ‘Feels Like Heaven’ he takes risks, but it turns out average.
‘Feels Like Heaven’ was written with Sia and it shows: her melodic signature is evident in the chorus, as it was in Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds’ (2012). The problem is that Sia has scammed Loreen and given her whatever she had written down there. Céline Dion rejected the song before it reached the Swedish singer’s hands, in case that information is of any use.
Co-written with Jesse Shatkin, who has worked with Kylie and Ellie Goulding, ‘Feels Like Heaven’ offers inflated drama without substance, well represented in the lyrical moment when Loreen “raises her fist to the sky.” Behind all the euphoria that the song expresses, there is a glimpse of a melody that never becomes clear. It’s as if Loreen spent the entire song searching for it, lost in the digital haze of the production.
The musical basis of ‘Feels Like Heaven’ has been strengthened with the help of producer Miles Avery, whose hand for electronics is evident in the final result. Loreen’s powerful voice struggles to be heard in the sonic density, which seems a deliberate aesthetic decision. But, for some reason, the style of ‘Feels Like Heaven’ decides to place itself between the post-dubstep of a decade ago and Eurovision midtempo, without ever nailing the balance.
‘Feels Like Heaven’, which “traces a journey from wounded resistance to open healing”, is the new preview of ‘Wildfire’, the album that Loreen publishes on March 27. By the way, ‘Tattoo’ – which is already three years old – will be one of the cuts included in the album, as well as ‘Is It Love’, but not ‘Forever’, their 2024 single.
